I just added a new line to my resume. As of 1/1/11, I’m a writer and producer for Gin and Tea Productions.
Gin and Tea Productions is a joint venture with a handful of extremely talented and creative individuals. The spark for the idea came one day while sharing drinks with a couple of friends, Amit and Judge. Amit is a filmmaker, Judge a born performer. They had started working on a passion project together, and it was starting to come together. Because I’m a nice guy, I said if they needed any help, I’d be happy to do whatever I could.
Before I could finish the sentence, my offer had already been accepted, and I was volunteered as a grip at the next shoot. While at the time I was making a mental note to keep my mouth shut in the future, being on set changed my perspective entirely. The professionalism, the talent and the enthusiasm that I witnessed in those hours blew me away. That’s when I knew that this was something special.
The next conversation I had with Amit and Judge was about their plans for the short film they were working on. They had the creativity, the talent, and the enthusiasm to create a fantastic piece of work, but not the expertise or means to make sure it was seen by a wider audience or to profit from it. That’s where I came in.
The natural question here is, what do I know about being a producer? The short answer is nothing. But what I do know is creating, marketing and selling a product. Whether that product is search advertising, purple widgets, or film is irrelevant. The skill set is the same.
A few brainstorming sessions later, Gin & Tea Productions was born. A passion project with a mission statement and business plan. Our goal is to produce top-quality professional films, without the pretentiousness that often accompanies anything labeled art. My personal goal with this project is to help a talented group of individuals get the exposure they deserve, and to apply the skills and experience I’ve accumulated in my professional career to a venture that I’m personally and financially invested in.
A nice side bonus is that it will also give me the occasional opportunity to write for a medium that up to now I have no experience in.
So, if you’re so inclined, wander over to Gin & Tea and learn more about the team, the project, what we’ve done, and where we’re going. Also, make sure to check out the first short film produced by G&T, “So Many Questions.”
